Myself and the middle two have another week at home. Poor Elizabeth, Simon and Sebastian are back on Monday. Sebastian is only going to do his funded hours as he doesn't need to be there all day while I'm not at work, I am looking forward to having time with my smallest people while feeling very sorry for the others. They will come home to many baked goods though which should compensate slightly.

Working full time for the last half term has taken it out of me a bit, I am very tired and (sometimes) grouchy, snappy, teary and sulky. I do tend to over cuddle when I feel like this so I think the children take it all in their stride and know how much I love them.

While we could all be together we packed up our tent and headed off Whitby way.

A mixed week of sunshine and rain, cold and glorious sunny heat. And lots and lots of time together. Just what we needed!!

A lovely week. My poor washing machine hasn't stopped since we got home last night, I only have the sleeping bags to wash and the tent to air and then it's all done and can be put away until the end of July when our next trip is planned.

How has your week been?
That really is the best word to describe me at the moment!

It seems a long time since I started working all week, my house is not as it once was, the ironing/washing is piled high, the floors are suffering for not having their every-other-day-mop, the cooker top gets left after tea in favour of cuddles and stories, the children are missing the fresh baking that once welcomed them home from school, Sebastian is a tired grumpy boy by 6pm (being a 'Munchkin' everyday is hard when you're just three).

My role has changed dramatically too, I have lots more responsibility, the number of families I have on my case load is doubled until a replacement is found for my colleague who had to start her maternity leave ten weeks before she was due to! I have taken some speciality responsibilities from another team member who has left us for pastures new. I feel like I have been running to stand still. I'm sure it will get easier as I find my stride and I'm looking forward to the extra money too!

Only two more weeks then half term holidays for me :) We're planning a week in our tent in Whitby so please keep your fingers crossed for sunshine!

It has't been all work, I had a very drunken weekend with some lovely friends to celebrate our 'Betty's' wedding day. It was just what we all needed and the sun even shined for the happy couple;
My friend Gil (my all time favourite Knit and Stitch shopping companion) and I drove across to Harrogate to visit Lynsey and her Swirlyarts stand at BCTF. It was a very good job that we weren't allowed to buy as we'd have had to take out a mortgage to cover all the beautiful things we saw. I'll tell you more about some of my favourites another day.
We all went to the pub on Friday night to say a big congratulations to my baby sister (she's only 22) who agreed to marry her partner Karl. It was somewhat of a double celebration as we all had to say goodbye to them both as they have had a job offer in Fort William and are leaving tomorrow to start a brand new adventure of a life together.
Inbetween there has been car washes, walks in the sun, playdough and lego in the rain, I have managed some knitting on the secretish type project that needed stars. The baby in question arrived a massively shocking ten weeks early, she is small and beautiful and so strong despite her tiny size. She will remain at the hospital for some time yet, she is spending more time with her Mummy and less time on the ventilator and everything looks very hopeful. It does solve my star problem though. I have decided to go with the flower shaped ones and if they still look very like flowers when I have stitched them in place I am going to sew buttons to the centres (she is a girl after all)!

Her Mummy has a bit of an owl obsession going on so I created these for baby and her big brother. The pink owl is hanging in baby's incubator :)
A good holiday although it flashed by us and we could have done with another few days!!

It's going to be all change round here too. As of tomorrow I will be a full time working Mum. Not sure how that snuck up on me. We are having staffing problems at work and I was asked if I could take up some of the slack until the end of the summer term. I said yes.

Not sure if I have made a sound decision to benefit my little family finacially and aid the progression of a career or if I have made the worst decision of my life. Will have to let you know on Friday!!
Am in the middle of a secretish type project and I need some stars. I don't do dpns and that seems to be somewhat of a hindrance.

I have come up with these two after knitting at least a trillion over the last two days.

I liked knitting this, it is super easy and quick (which is good as I may need up to twenty) but it's just not pointy enough - even with a dampening and stretching;

This is a little more fiddly but still knitted flat which pleases me. I do like the finished star but somehow it is saying "I am a flower...."

The stars will be sewn down flat to a large flat piece of knitted fabric (sorry, can't say much in case someone is watching) so am thinking that the flower/star may look better when it's curly edges are tamed.

Ignore the size and yarn, I just used odds from my stash.

Any preference, comments, guidance or alternative suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanking you in advance my brilliant bloggy/knitty pals xDaisiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13865419216624616768noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786226519125775102.post-36579806809114812322013-04-05T21:35:00.000+01:002013-04-05T21:35:07.520+01:00Easter Holidays Part OneThe first week of the holidays have gone already, how is that possible??
The last week summed up in a few pictures;

Hope you're all having fun and staying warm?!
My husband was very kind to point out exactly how old I turned on my birthday last weeek (I'll be kind and not tell what he's half way to), it seems not so old some days and very old on others, I don't get hung up on numbers (cos that's all they are really) but what really annoys me and seems greatly unfair is spots and wrinkles?! What is that all about?? Surely if I am old enough for one I should not still be sprouting the other?

I got some lovely gifts and cards from those special people in my life.

My new favourite mug;
A brilliant book bought on the recommendation of the lovely Jenny and a new work mug from my colleagues;
30 minute knits is fab (and it was bought for a bargain price via ebay) and the children have lined up projects for me already. I managed to knit this little angry bird inspired chap for Nathaniel while we snuggled on Saturday afternoon;

My littlest sister brought me a huge chocolate cake she had baked for tea. I got to go to work in my PJs as we were 'doing something funny for money'. My very dear friend bought me some tea towels, I have been asking for new tea towels for over a year and of all the ears I have nagged she came through, I now have six beautiful, bright tea towels not be ashamed off! My friend Gil (my Knit&Stitch companion) gave me a huge bag of beautiful yarns (which will get their own post soon), she said as they were destash we couldn't really call them a present but they made me squeal with delight!

So all in all I don't mind much being half way to seventy!!

PS: Thank you to everyone who wished me well after my last post. I am still full of snot and sore throaty but can manage to get showered without wanting to cry. I am coming out the other side (so to speak) now, it is the worst lurgy I have had in a very very long time!!

School does not make Mother's Day or Father's Day cards with the children anymore which is very sad. On a Friday afternoon there is an hour of 'golden time', a reward to the children that have worked hard all week, they can choose an activity (craft, outdoor play, dress-up, TV time) and Nathaniel chose to make me a card, all on his own which makes it even more special!!

Sebastian made some foot prints with his nursery teachers, he cut out the flower and wrote his name all by himself;

One huge knitted puff;

Or pouffe, if you'd rather.

Our bean bags had seen better days and when we are all together movie watching on a Sunday afternoon there are too many bums for seats and it's always me that ends up on the floor with a numb bum and pins and needles in my feet.

So I had a good old look round the web and found a wonderful knitted puff, only £92, well, that was a bit beyond my budget.

So a little more time with good old goggle (it really can be your best friend) and I found some good tutorials but the yarn suggested was (at cheapest) going to cost me around £70 and then I'd have to stuff the thing. I was resigned to a life on the floor when inspiration struck.

Around 500g of chunky sirdar click in peppercorn left over from my blanket knitting a while ago (can't find the post, sorry) knitted with a double strand on 10mm needles and stuffed with a smartprice duvet.

A good place to sit and eat your danish pastry;

Or have a snooze;

And show everyone your spiderman trainers because that will enrich their lives immeasurable;

No more numb bum for me thank you very much!

There are some good old staples; the slouch cross body bag and a mini messenger with new fabrics for a fresh feel (not pictured) .

I am most pleased with this variation;

Tied long to wear cross body

Tied short to wear on your shoulder

Why have I never seen this before?!

I have been making this style and pulling the straps through the right way before joining them together for years, why has it never occurred to me to not join them?

And with some careful seam finishing the bag has no inside or outside so can be used either way.

All are machine washable cotton so can be used and washed and used and washed (I have a slouch that is four years old and has been through the wash countless times).
Is it sad that this development excites me?

There are four new bags and some small felt owl cushions waiting to be delivered to the shop this week.

You can see regular updates on things I am making by going and 'liking' my facebook page here.
And there have been lots of things inbetween; working, MOTing, cleaning, duck-feeding, relative visiting, cooking, baking and the usual family stuffage.

I have managed to cast on and half knit two (def) or three (poss) gifts to put away for the festivities coming in December, how organised am I???!!!

Hope all is well with you?

It's enormous and I love it!

I don't do classy, I don't do colour themes, I don't do organised and regimented, I do chuck it all on and laugh and cry at the memories stored there.
There are all kinds of decorations that the children have made over the years and decorations we have been gifted or gathered on our travels. It does look a bit like a Christmas shop has vomitted on my tree but I do love it;
This is our 18th Christmas together, I do wonder if there will be room for all the delights we'll collect in the next twenty years and if not will we need two trees....?

It gets in the way but in a very enjoyable (on the whole) kind of way.

I have been keeping the shop stocked (and collecting my earnings), working hard, mothering intensely, fulfilling wifely duties and preparing for Christmas.

The presents are wrapped, the tree is up (just) and decorated, only some knitting to finish and a couple of friends to catch up with before the madness begins.

I managed to ice the cake too;

I said I had been approached by a couple of outlets during the mammoth fair of last month and this one came off. They rang me and after a few cancelled appointments due to the illness from hell I went down to the gallery yesterday. It's a very new venture and still has the last owner's sign above the door (they only moved in a week ago) but I did say (in very enthusiastic terms) that No 6 should stay as it's simple and classy and does exactly what it says on the tin!!

There are currently around 26 artists displaying work at No 6, there are textile arts, paint ( water colour, acrylic, spray), sculpture, turned wood, furniture etc. It made my heart swell that Libby described my work as art. Kind of is really; an idea, a creation, a tactile artwork to wear but I never thought of it like that before.

This is my little corner;

There are a few items that Libby and I would like to add so am knitting like a loon while snuggling a poorly Francesca on the sofa.

Next week sees the arrival of their coffee machine and I have said I may bake scones too, so if you are in and aorund Burnley and fancy popping in to say hi (feel free to mention me) and view all the wonderful creations and get yourself a cuppa go along to No 6, Standish Street!!
A lovely couple showed interest in stocking some of my chunky knits in their shop (just waiting to hear) but there were a few older ladies who told me it was 'cheating' to be knitting on such big pins with such chunky yarn. Yes it's quick and simple but really effective and eye catching!

I am currently working on a bag pattern for my strokable Artesano yarn for said couple but I am also knitting a shawl with some super skinny yarn on tiny 2mm needles.

So from one extreme;

The lovely Lizi

To another;

Like knitting a spider's web

I can't wait to see how this looks when it's finished. The yarn is a very fine cotton in white with a metallic silver thread running through it, my photography skills (or lack thereof) don't really do it justice.

I have had a day of no making, the first for many weeks. Seb and I pottered around in town and bought some new slippers, found Elizabeth some shoes she has been after for a while, changed the beds, washed the floors, the usual really with lots of snuggles spread throughout the day.

We have no Simon tonight so we have talked and eaten cauliflower cheese as just five. It was good to catch up, I have missed them!

And after tea we all had a try on of Elizabeth's new accessory;

This is my pitch, right inside the front doors;

Nelson is one of Mary Portas' Pilot towns and it's all going on this weekend. I am based in The Ace Centre with other crafters and makers, there is also amazing exhibitions by local artists and photographers. There are more stalls, workshops, fashion shows and a vintage tea room over at The Victory Centre (just three minutes walk round the corner). A lovely lady was around yesterday taking pictures for the council, you can see some here.

If you are near (and able) please pop along and say hello to me, the wonderful Lynsey will be there all weekend and the fabulous Heather will be joining the fun at the Victory Centre on Sunday.

I have a three day fair coming up next Friday, I have the migraine from hell (day four) and thought I'd just potter about today, find my things, wash the stall cloth and gather myself together in preparation.

Oh no, some silly woman (that would be me) has tidied and put things away! I had a large stock of Gruffalo inspired monsters and Christmas puddings and ice skates and mini button wreaths and can I find the damn things, oh no, I cannot :(

I sold lots at a fair last November and I know we gifted some to teachers last December but there should be between 20 and 30 in a bag somewhere.......

The location of said bag is a mystery.

So today I stayed in my PJs, popped pills, drank warm drinks, kept the heating on, snuggled with my small people and watched 101 Dalmations and made these;

Think I may need to make a few more don't you?!
It matters not from what angle I do it or how many mirrors I have postioned around me to see the little screen on my camera, it matters not what time of day it is or what it is I'm modelling, it is just never how I want it to be.

I am missing our small four legged pal, he has been in our lives for such a long time. He was never meant to be our cat. A colleague's cat had kittens and we took two off her hands (Josephine and Hercule) but the third tom had a home. Within a few days Vincent's new owners decided he wasn't for them and he came to join his brother and sister with us on New Year's Eve 1996.

He got caught in the door as a kitten and had a 'gammy' leg all his life, he came home one day about ten years ago with a broken tail so held it at a jaunty angle forever more. He survived a dog/fox attack a while ago. We really did think the old chap would out live us all!!

But on Saturday evening a bloke from across the road knocked and called Simon outside, Simon came back with a very dead cat. It appears the man's dog had got hold of Vincent and he was unable to seperate them before the damage was done. Although I am grateful for his bravery in coming to tell us I am so very angry and sad.

It will be nice to leave my knitting out and know it will not end up covered in little soft white hairs and I can leave food unattended knowing he will not sneak in a sample it but I miss his warm weight on my toes at night and miss him snuggling against me in the cold evenings.
He has left a very big hole.

Bye Vincent, we will remember you fondly x
Being three and having to blow three big candles out after the birthday song was hard work, it took him soooo long to blow out all three but would have help from no one;
